Typhoon Champi, the 30th typhoon of the year, strengthened from a severe typhoon into a super typhoon on Saturday night (Oct. 17), according to the China Meteorological Administration (CMA).
At 5 a.m. on Sunday, the storm's centre was over the northwestern Pacific, about 90 kilometres southwest of Guam, with maximum sustained winds near its centre reaching force 17, or 62 metres per second.
The CMA forecast that Champi would continue moving west-northwest at 10 to 15 kilometres per hour, gradually approaching the waters east of Taiwan. Its intensity is expected to increase further.
Meanwhile, according to the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) at 7:45 a.m. on Sunday, a fresh to strong easterly airstream was affecting the coast of Guangdong.
HK will be mostly cloudy today, with one or two light rain showers in the morning. There will be sunny intervals and dry conditions during the day, with a maximum temperature of around 31°C in urban areas and temperatures one to two degrees higher in the New Territories.
Moderate to fresh easterly winds are expected, with occasional strong winds over high ground at first.
The HKO forecast sunny and dry weather over the next two to three days, with very hot conditions during the day on Wednesday.
