Hong Kong continues to be rated as the world's freest economy in the Economic Freedom of the World 2026 Annual Report released by the Fraser Institute on Oct. 6.
Lau Chi-pang, member of the 14th CPPCC National Committee and the Legislative Council, states that it is not surprising at all. Since the mid-19th century, our city has relied on a free economy as a major pillar. As early as the 1980s, our national leaders had already proposed "One Country, Two Systems". The most important aspect of "One Country, Two Systems" is that after Hong Kong's return to the motherland, the city still retains a very free economic system, enabling Hong Kong to still occupy a leading position amid fierce global competition.
