Katie Zacharia, who took office as White House press secretary this week, is leaving the role, US media reported. President Trump had earlier told reporters she should reconsider the job.
In a social media post late Friday, Zacharia spoke of the post in the past tense, calling Trump "a kind, great, gracious, thoughtful, passionate and hardworking person" and saying it was "an honour" to work for him.
The Associated Press said Zacharia looked uneasy at her first briefing on Tuesday, stumbling over praise of the president. She also faced questions over her legal credentials and remarks on China, admitting on Fox News that she had not passed the bar exam, and telling another interviewer that China lacked decent toilets.
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at Friday's briefing: "We welcome her to have the opportunity to come and see more of China."
