China has emphasized that protectionism has no way out, decoupling and breaking the industrial chain will only isolate oneself, and there are no winners in trade or tariff conflicts, according to Guo Jiakun. (CCTV)

The regular news briefing was led by Guo Jiakun, the spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry, on April 23. Donald Trump stated that high tariffs on Chinese imports will "come down substantially, but it won't be zero" in response to a reporter's question during a White House news conference. What does China have to say about this?

China has emphasized that protectionism has no way out, decoupling and breaking the industrial chain will only isolate oneself, and there are no winners in trade or tariff conflicts, according to Guo Jiakun.

He said that China has made its stance on the U.S.-initiated trade war extremely apparent. Neither do we fear nor are we eager to fight it. If they want to fight, we'll fight until the end. If they want to negotiate, we would be very welcoming.

He added that the United States should cease threatening and extorting China and start a dialogue based on equality, respect, and mutual gain if it wants to resolve the issue through dialogue and negotiation. It consistently applies intense pressure while pretending to have reached an agreement with China. Maintaining maximal pressure on the other side while claiming to have reached an agreement with China is not the right approach and will not succeed.
