A University of Hong Kong (HKU) pediatrician on Sunday (Jan. 26) called on people to stay on the alert, saying the current influenza outbreak may worsen after the Lunar New Year holiday.

Speaking on a radio program, Mike Kwan from HKU's Department of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine said the flu season is expected to peak next month, and people should get vaccinated as soon as possible, if they haven't already done so.

"Temperatures will drop during the upcoming Lunar New Year [holiday], and there will be more social contact through New Year visits and gatherings," he said.

"Some residents will also travel abroad, but they should be aware that many countries across Asia, including Japan and Korea, are currently experiencing flu outbreaks, so everyone needs to be careful."

Three severe flu cases involving children were reported last week, with two of them unvaccinated.

Kwan said kids who've received the flu jab typically show milder symptoms, and require only one to two days of hospitalization in more serious cases.

The expert also urged members of the public to use reliable test kits and maintain good personal hygiene.
