Former U.S. President Joe Biden announced preemptive pardons for his five family members, including his brother James Biden, his wife, his sister Valerie Owens, and his brother Francis Biden, 15 minutes before leaving office on January 20.
Biden claimed that these preemptive pardons were intended to prevent them from facing ruthless attacks and threats; however, some media outlets pointed out that this was just one of the reasons.
According to a report from the political news website Politico, during Biden's tenure, the U.S. Department of Justice had been investigating his brother James. James was involved in multiple scandals, accused by Republicans of lying to Congressional impeachment investigators, and was under criminal investigation for alleged federal health insurance fraud. In this health insurance fraud case, the implicated hospital operator Americore had collaborated with James.
