Joshua Wong, former secretary-general of the now-defunct Demosisto, was charged under the Hong Kong National Security Law with conspiracy to collude with foreign or overseas forces to endanger national security. He pleaded guilty earlier and was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment at the High Court today (Nov. 5). Steve Li, Chief Superintendent of the Police National Security Department, met the press outside the High Court this morning to respond to the sentencing in the Joshua Wong foreign collusion case.

Steve Li welcomed the court's ruling. He said that under the Hong Kong National Security Law, a sentence of 10 years' imprisonment for conspiracy to collude with foreign or overseas forces to endanger national security shows that the court has confirmed the serious nature of Joshua Wong's offence.

He pointed out that before the implementation of the National Security Law, the case facts showed that Joshua Wong had already taken the following actions: in November 2016, he went to the US to promote the passage of the Hong Kong Human Rights and Democracy Act; and in September 2019, he and Nathan Law travelled to the US Congress to testify for advocacy, and subsequently went to Germany and other places to lobby. After the implementation of the Hong Kong National Security Law, that is, after July 2020, Nathan Law fled overseas, while Joshua Wong remained in Hong Kong and continued to promote smear campaigns and hostile acts against the SAR government, only stopping after he was imprisoned in November 2020.

Steve Li said that Joshua Wong had already participated in "social movements" as a minor, and from the age of 18 committed various offences, including two offences under the National Security Law and multiple offences related to unlawful assembly — a prolific offender. In particular, regarding the siege of the Police Headquarters on June 21, 2019, Joshua Wong was charged as an organiser and instigator.

Steve Li stressed that he hopes Joshua Wong will, during his future imprisonment, reflect on the wrongs and bad deeds he has done to himself, to the country, and to Hong Kong, and at the same time seize the opportunity to cultivate a law-abiding spirit and to gain a proper understanding of his country.
