Joshua Wong, former secretary-general of the now-defunct Demosisto and already serving a four-year and eight-month sentence in the "35+ subversion case" case, was arrested in prison in June last year and charged with conspiring with Nathan Law and others to collude with foreign or overseas forces to endanger national security between July and November 2020. He pleaded guilty earlier and was sentenced to 10 years' imprisonment at the High Court today (Nov. 5).
In passing sentence, Judge William Tam said that assessing the seriousness of the offence requires an overall consideration of the case. After considering the defence submissions, the court found that the case falls within the "serious offence" category.
Joshua Wong was charged with conspiracy to collude with foreign or overseas forces to endanger national security — that between July 1, 2020 and Nov. 23, 2020, in Hong Kong, he conspired with Nathan Law and others of unknown identity to request foreign or overseas institutions, organisations, or personnel to impose sanctions, blockades, or take other hostile actions against the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region or the People's Republic of China. Joshua Wong pleaded guilty to the charge earlier.
The case facts stated that before the Hong Kong National Security Law took effect, Demosisto members had participated in multiple so-called international lobbying projects and met with foreign politicians. After the National Security Law came into force, Joshua Wong still declared that he would not give up his political stance and opinions and would continue to "seek international attention."
Joshua Wong was earlier sentenced to four years and eight months in prison on Nov. 19, 2024, for conspiracy to subvert state power. In June 2025, he was charged in prison in the present collusion with foreign forces case. Under the Hong Kong National Security Law, conspiracy to collude with foreign or overseas forces to endanger national security carries, upon conviction, a term of not less than three years and not more than 10 years' imprisonment; if the offence is of a serious nature, the sentence may range from 10 years' imprisonment to life imprisonment.
