Joshua Wong Chi-fung, former secretary-general of the now-disbanded group Demosisto, who is serving four years and eight months in the "35+ subversion case" for subverting state power, was arrested in prison in June last year and charged with acts committed between July and November 2020. He was accused of conspiring with Nathan Law Kwun-chung and others to collude with foreign or external forces to endanger national security, pleaded guilty, and was sentenced to 10 years at the High Court on Thursday (Nov. 5).
From a "political star" who once leaned on foreign powers for clout to a man brought to justice, Wong and others' fate clearly proves the national security law's efficacy in ending violence and restoring order. No one enjoys privilege before the law: every force and individual that seeks to endanger national security and wreck Hong Kong's prosperity and stability will in the end find no hiding place from the long arm of the law.
Proxies never come to a good end, and foreign forces will not serve their prison terms for them. The doors thrown open to those who destabilised Hong Kong were not those of the US and Europe, hyped as a "heaven on earth," but the place criminals deserve.
