A serious rockfall accident occurred on Thursday (Oct. 29) at the famous Turkish attraction Cappadocia. A volcanic rock pillar known as a "Fairy Chimney" suddenly collapsed, with large amounts of rock crashing down onto the parking lot area below, causing at least 3 deaths and 5 injuries. The incident occurred during the Turkish National Day holiday, when the scenic Oct was crowded with tourists, and rescue workers are still searching the rubble for anyone trapped.

According to CNN, the accident occurred in the Göreme area of Nevşehir Province in central Turkey, near the Göreme Open Air Museum. In the afternoon local time, a large volcanic rock pillar suddenly collapsed, with debris rolling down the hillside and striking people below and the area near the parking lot.

Nevşehir Province Governor Hüseyin Kok said that recent days of rain may have been the cause of the rock collapse. Rescue workers have arrived at the scene and are continuing to search for people who may be buried under the fallen rocks. He noted that two of the three dead were Turkish citizens, while the identity of the other deceased has not yet been released.

Turkish Justice Minister Akin Gurlek said the accident caused at least 3 deaths and 5 injuries, and the authorities have launched an investigation into the incident. Footage from local television showed rescue workers using heavy machinery to clear rock debris, with fire and medical personnel standing by at the scene.

Cappadocia is famous for its unique volcanic terrain, dotted with oddly shaped rock pillars that, through years of weathering and erosion, have formed chimney-like landscapes, hence the name "Fairy Chimneys." The area is not only one of Turkey's most representative tourist destinations, but has also been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its special geological landscape, rock-cut churches and underground cities.
