A 16-year-old Hong Kong girl, Luna Wong, died by suicide during a London summer camp in July 2023, according to a Guardian investigation published Sept.26. Wong, who had been diagnosed with depression, anxiety and ADHD in 2019, was sent to Wrekin College in Shropshire in Sept. 2022, after her parents disclosed her condition to the school.
In July 2023, she attended a private psychology summer camp in London, where she showed severe distress and asked to withdraw. After she was absent from class, staff knocked on her door with no response and did not follow up; another staff member later used a master key and found her dead, more than 40 hours after she was last seen alive.
An inquest ruled she died by suicide via prescription medication overdose and found she never received a mental health assessment in the UK. Reports concluded the UK lacks mandatory regulation and eligibility checks for education guardians and summer camps. Guardians allegedly concealed her condition and self-harm history, while the provider of the £6,740 course reportedly let her keep large quantities of psychiatric medication. Despite recommendations, no statutory regulation has been implemented.
Wong's parents condemned the system, saying the provider "took the money but did not take care of my child."
