Flooding triggered by days of heavy rain in Thailand continued to wreak havoc as of Sept. 28, leaving at least eight people dead and affecting more than 580,000 households nationwide. Economic losses are estimated at at least 11 billion baht (about US$327 million) and could rise further.
In the capital, floodwaters remained in some areas after heavy weekend rainfall, prompting the emergency evacuation of nearly 6,000 people to 234 shelters across the city. More concerningly, water levels in upstream rivers have continued to rise, with a new wave of flooding threatening Bangkok and surrounding areas.
The Thai government has declared public holidays for civil servants in Bangkok and three neighboring provinces on Sept. 28 and 29, freeing up manpower for flood prevention and relief efforts.
Meanwhile, photos showing residents rushing to stock up on food and daily necessities have circulated widely on social media, adding to concerns over shortages and market pressure.
The weather authorities forecast heavy rain in parts of Thailand over the coming days, with the flood situation remaining challenging.
