The Chinese Embassy in Thailand issued a clarification on Sep. 2 regarding Thailand's adjustment to its visa-free entry policy, confirming that the bilateral visa exemption agreement between China and Thailand remains unaffected and that Chinese citizens can still enjoy visa-free travel to Thailand with valid passports.
The Thai government recently announced adjustments to the duration of visa-free stays, with the new rules set to take effect on Sep. 15, 2026. Following verification with relevant Thai authorities, the Chinese Embassy clarified that Thailand's adjustment cancels the previous unilateral 60-day visa-free policy that had been extended to 93 countries and regions, including China. However, the Agreement between the Government of the People's Republic of China and the Government of the Kingdom of Thailand on Mutual Visa Exemption for Holders of Ordinary Passports, which took effect on March 1, 2024, remains valid.
Under this bilateral agreement, Chinese citizens holding valid passports will continue to enjoy visa-free entry to Thailand. Starting Sep. 15, 2026, Chinese nationals with ordinary passports or public affairs ordinary passports may enter Thailand visa-free for tourism, family visits, and other purposes permitted under the agreement, for a single stay of no more than 30 days (with a cumulative stay not exceeding 90 days within any 180-day period).
The embassy also reminded that visa-free entry does not mean unconditional entry. Those intending to engage in activities requiring prior approval — such as work, study, news reporting, or settlement — or those planning to stay in Thailand for more than 30 days must obtain the appropriate visa before entry. Travelers should ensure their passports meet Thailand's validity requirements, complete the required Thailand Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) declaration, comply with Thai immigration laws and regulations, and refrain from overstaying or engaging in activities inconsistent with the purpose of entry.
