CCTV News reported that the Chinese Consulate General in Surabaya stated today (Sept. 6), urging Chinese citizens to stay alert to the ongoing forest fire at the Ijen volcano tourist site.
According to the statement, forest and mountain fires have recently broken out in the Ijen volcano reserve in East Java Province, Indonesia. The flames have reached the crater's main hiking trail, and the situation remains volatile, with significant risks on the ground.
Following an official notice from the East Java conservation agency, the Ijen volcano tourist site, its hiking trails, and all related tourism activities have been fully suspended as of Sept. 4, 2026. A reopening date has yet to be announced.
To ensure the safety of Chinese nationals in its consular district, the Chinese Consulate General in Surabaya has issued the following urgent advisory:
1. Suspend all travel immediately
All Chinese tourists, hikers, and travellers planning to visit the Ijen volcano site in the Banyuwangi and Bondowoso regions should cancel their trips and avoid travelling to the area. During the fire, the site presents multiple dangers, including spreading flames, smoke inhalation, road closures, and limited rescue access.
2. Adjust travel plans without delay
Those who have already booked tours, hiking packages, local transport, or accommodation related to Ijen should contact their travel agencies, booking platforms, or hotels as soon as possible to arrange refunds, rescheduling, or rebooking—to avoid being stranded or incurring unnecessary costs.
3. Follow all local regulations strictly
The site is now under full closure. Unauthorised entry, off-trail hiking, and night treks are strictly prohibited. Travellers are advised to monitor updates from local fire and disaster management authorities, as well as official site channels, and only resume travel after the site has been officially declared safe.
