Smoke from wildfires in Canada continues to spread across the central and northeastern US, prompting air quality alerts in multiple states and causing severe pollution in cities including New York and Washington.
With the FIFA World Cup final set to take place on July 19, the match venue in New Jersey, near New York City, has been shrouded in smoke haze. The state has also experienced strong winds and heavy rain in recent days, adding further uncertainty over conditions at the stadium.
According to the US Weather Prediction Center, the US is currently facing multiple extreme weather events, including widespread wildfire smoke, extreme heat and catastrophic flooding. Smoke is expected to continue affecting parts of the Midwest, the Northeast and southern Canada over the coming weeks.
However, the center said recent heavy rainfall in New York could help improve air quality, raising the prospect of significantly better conditions on the day of the World Cup final.
FIFA said it is maintaining close contact with the relevant authorities in New Jersey while continuing to monitor the potential impact of wildfire smoke and storms on conditions at the final venue.
