A broad trough of low pressure is bringing showers and thunderstorms to Guangdong and the northern part of the South China Sea. In Hong Kong, many areas have recorded over 30 millimetres of rainfall over the past few hours. The Hong Kong Observatory cancelled the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal at 2:10 pm today (July 20), but reminded the public to remain alert to the potential dangers of river flooding.

The Observatory issued a Thunderstorm Warning at 5:10 am today, valid until 3:30 pm this afternoon, predicting localised thunderstorms over eastern parts of the New Territories and eastern Hong Kong waters.

The Observatory advises the public to take the following precautions during thunderstorms:

  1. If outdoors, seek shelter in a safe place.

  2. Stay away from water. Do not swim or engage in other outdoor water sports.

  3. Do not stand on high ground or near conductive objects, trees, or masts.

The Observatory expects localised heavy rain in some areas early tomorrow (July 21). Wednesday will see a few showers with sunny intervals. The weather will gradually become fine and very hot over the following one to two days. The weather will become unsettled over the weekend.
