The No. 1 Standby Signal in Hong Kong will remain in force throughout Wednesday (Sept. 2) as Typhoon Saudel moves farther away from the city, the Hong Kong Observatory said.
In an update at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday, the Observatory said Saudel was moving northeastward across the northeastern part of the South China Sea, gradually increasing its distance from HK.
Under the combined influence of Saudel and the northeast monsoon, strong winds are occasionally affecting offshore areas and high ground in HK. The Observatory expects the No. 1 Standby Signal to remain in force for the rest of the day.
According to the latest forecast, Saudel will linger over the northeastern South China Sea tonight and early Thursday (Sept. 3). It is then more likely to turn westward and move along the eastern coast of Guangdong.
The storm is expected to approach the Pearl River Estuary again around Friday to Saturday (Sept. 4-5), although its intensity at that time remains highly uncertain.
The Observatory said it will closely monitor Saudel's movement and assess whether the No. 3 Strong Wind Signal needs to be issued as the storm approaches the Pearl River Estuary.
