The Observatory expects Saudel to pass about 200 km southeast of HK later this afternoon before gradually strengthening and moving closer to the eastern coast of Guangdong from tonight through Wednesday (Sept. 2). (HKO)

Typhoon Saudel has made a comeback after the remnant vortex of this year's 18th typhoon developed into a tropical depression and re-intensified into a typhoon over the northwestern South China Sea early Tuesday (Sept. 1).

According to the Hong Kong Observatory's tropical cyclone warning issued at 7:45 a.m., HK is currently experiencing generally northerly winds under the combined influence of Saudel and the northeast monsoon.

Due to the sheltering effect of the terrain, strong winds are not expected to be widespread across HK during the day. The Observatory said the No. 1 Standby Signal will remain in force until at least 6 p.m.

The Observatory expects Saudel to pass about 200 km southeast of HK later this afternoon before gradually strengthening and moving closer to the eastern coast of Guangdong from tonight through Wednesday (Sept. 2).

Winds in HK are expected to strengthen gradually. The Observatory will assess whether to issue the No. 3 Strong Wind Signal based on Saudel's intensity, the distance between its associated strong wind area and the Pearl River Estuary, as well as changes in local wind conditions.
