Tropical Cyclone Saudel has moved to within about 800 kilometres of Hong Kong, but the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) said the chances of issuing a Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal remain low unless the storm tracks closer to the Pearl River Estuary.

A separate, broad low-pressure trough, however, is expected to bring unsettled weather to the Guangdong coast and the northern part of the South China Sea early next week. Artificial-intelligence forecast models suggest a low-pressure system could form along the trough around Tuesday, Sept 1, the first day of the new school year.

According to the HKO's Earth Weather platform, the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) projects the system will develop around Sept 1 over waters to the east of Hainan Island and near the Pratas and Paracel Islands. It is then expected to drift slowly northeastward, gradually edging closer to Hong Kong.

The system is forecast to make its nearest approach to the territory on Sept 3, moving towards waters southeast of Hong Kong and passing within 400 kilometres of the city.

In its latest nine-day forecast, the Observatory said Sept 1 will be mainly cloudy, with a few showers at first, isolated thunderstorms, and short sunny spells in the afternoon. Temperatures will range from 27°C to 32°C.

On Sept 2, sunny periods are expected, with one or two morning showers and very hot conditions during the day. Sunny spells are also expected to persist on parts of Sept 3.
