Hong Kong braces for four consecutive days of scorching weather, with temperatures in parts of the New Territories expected to reach 36 degrees Celsius or higher, according to the Hong Kong Observatory.
The Observatory forecast a minimum temperature of around 28°C on Friday morning (Aug. 7), with light winds. Daytime temperatures are expected to reach about 34°C in urban areas, while the New Territories will be two to three degrees hotter. Some districts will experience extreme heat, with isolated showers and squally thunderstorms expected later in the day.
The Observatory said a low-pressure area near Hainan Island is forecast to move generally across the north-central South China Sea over the next one to two days, bringing unstable weather to the region while remaining a considerable distance from HK.
Looking ahead, the Observatory expects hot weather to persist over the coming days despite isolated showers. Meanwhile, Severe Typhoon Dolphin is forecast to move across the Ryukyu Islands into the East China Sea before tracking towards the area between Zhejiang Province and northern Fujian Province.
Under the influence of Dolphin's peripheral subsiding air, daytime conditions are expected to become extremely hot over the weekend, with temperatures in parts of the New Territories reaching 36°C or above.
The Observatory reminded the public, especially those engaging in outdoor activities, to pay close attention to their physical condition and take precautions against heatstroke.
