The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) issued a special weather advisory at noon on Thursday (Aug. 6), warning that extremely hot weather is expected over the weekend, with temperatures reaching 36°C or above in parts of the New Territories.
According to the Observatory, a low-pressure area near Hainan Island is expected to move generally towards the north-central part of the South China Sea on Aug. 6 and 7, bringing unsettled weather to the region while remaining a considerable distance from HK.
The Observatory said it will closely monitor the system's intensity and movement.
The HKO forecasts that winds in HK will remain light on Thursday and Friday, while hot weather will persist over the coming days.
Affected by the subsiding air associated with the outer circulation of tropical cyclone Dolphin, the weather is expected to become extremely hot over the weekend, with temperatures reaching 36°C or higher in some parts of the New Territories.
The Observatory advised the public, especially those taking part in outdoor activities, to pay close attention to their physical condition and take precautions against heatstroke.
