According to the Observatory, Dolphin is not expected to pose a significant direct threat to HK. (HKO)

The tropical depression west of Luzon has intensified into Tropical Storm Dolphin, the Hong Kong Observatory said on Wednesday (Aug. 5).

According to the Observatory, current forecasts indicate that Dolphin will linger over the central part of the South China Sea near Luzon, remaining about 700 kilometres or more away from HK. The storm is therefore not expected to pose a significant direct threat to the city.

In a special weather tip, the Observatory said the likelihood of issuing the No. 1 Standby Signal is relatively low unless Dolphin takes a track closer to the coast of Guangdong.

The Observatory also forecast very hot weather in HK over the next few days and urged the public to monitor their physical condition and take precautions against heatstroke.
