What is the real look of the China-Vietnam border? How do people on both sides communicate and interact? Our reporter visited Malipo in Yunnan, the border city closest to Vietnam, to show you the authentic border life in the new era.
We came to Tianbao Port, a key passenger and cargo port connecting China and Vietnam. Separated only by a small river, it faces Vietnam’s Thanh Thuy International Border Gate. The border market here is bustling with cross-border goods and friendly exchanges between Chinese and Vietnamese people.
Lao Shan bears the profound history of border self-defense battles. Relics like bunkers and mine sites remind us that today’s peace is hard-won. Tourists often take part in boundary stone painting, a meaningful patriotic experience that makes people cherish territorial security. Young border guards stick to their posts, uphold the spirit of fearing no hardship and no sacrifice, and guard the border day and night.
From war memories to peaceful development, Malipo now boasts prosperous cross-border trade. Local ancient tea serves as a national diplomatic gift, while Yunnan Baiyao and other local products are exported overseas, boosting win-win bilateral trade.
Beyond border scenery, Malipo inherits precious traditional culture. Local schools integrate batik, an intangible cultural heritage, into daily classes. Children learn traditional craftsmanship, inherit ethnic culture and build cultural confidence from an early age.
This is the real China-Vietnam border: remembering the past, embracing opening-up and moving forward steadily in protection and cooperation.
