When talking about China-Laos cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative, it is often simplistically labelled one-way aid. In truth, it represents a two-way journey of walking side by side as partners.

Living and dining alongside local partners day in and day out, they share know-how through mentor-apprentice programmes and nurture local talent. Chinese and Lao staff celebrate each other’s traditional festivals, embracing cultural differences in daily interactions.
Life far away from home can be lonely, yet the mantra “Nothing is trivial on the China-Laos railway” constantly reminds young workers of their mission. These projects build transport and energy lifelines for Laos, while bringing local residents stable jobs, better pay and social security. Genuine cooperation is never one-sided delivery of resources. It means empowering others with capabilities, unlocking development potential hand in hand for a shared future.
