The family of English football legend Kevin Keegan confirmed on July 20 local time that the former England captain and manager had passed away at the age of 75.
Keegan was diagnosed with cancer this past January. He was one of the iconic figures in English football history, winning the European Footballer of the Year award twice during his playing career. As a manager, he took charge of several Premier League clubs and led the England national team at the 2000 European Championship.
In a statement released that day, his family said that Kevin was a dearly beloved husband, father, and grandfather. They also expressed gratitude to the medical teams for their support and asked for privacy for the family.
Newcastle United described Keegan as one of the most iconic, influential, and beloved figures in the club's history. Liverpool also paid tribute, stating that his fighting spirit and outstanding contributions would forever be etched in the club's history.
Former Newcastle striker Alan Shearer, who played under Keegan, posted a tribute on social media, calling him his idol, his manager, and his friend, and bidding farewell to the boss.
