Veteran Hong Kong actor Patrick Tse, affectionately known as "Fourth Brother," has died at the age of 89. According to local media reports, Tse died of pneumonia on July 16. A private cremation ceremony was held on Monday (July 20) at Wo Hop Shek Crematorium in Fanling under his birth name, Tse Ka-yuk.
Family members held a simple farewell ceremony at the hospital on Monday morning before transferring his body directly to Wo Hop Shek Crematorium for cremation. In accordance with his final wishes, no funeral home services were arranged, and only close family members attended the ceremony, reflecting his desire for a modest farewell without public attention.
Tse had been in poor health in his later years and relied on a wheelchair because of mobility issues. He had also reportedly suffered a stroke several years ago. According to reports, he was admitted to hospital earlier this month after developing pneumonia. His condition later deteriorated, and he was transferred to the intensive care unit.
His son, singer and actor Nicholas Tse, who had been in the Mainland preparing for a concert later this month, and his daughter Jennifer Tse, who was in Canada, both rushed back to Hong Kong after receiving news of their father's condition. They were able to see him one last time before his passing.
Having spent more than seven decades in the entertainment industry, Tse was known for his wide circle of friends and his charismatic, free-spirited personality. His family honoured his wish for a low-key farewell by arranging what is commonly known in Hong Kong as a "direct cremation from hospital"—a process in which the body is not taken to a traditional funeral parlour. Instead, a brief farewell ceremony is held in the hospital mortuary or farewell room before the body is taken directly for cremation, without a public wake or memorial service. Only his children and closest family members accompanied him on his final journey.
Tse's former wife Deborah Lee, together with Nicholas Tse and Jennifer Tse, arrived at Wo Hop Shek Crematorium on Monday morning to handle the funeral arrangements. Just days after his death, the family completed all funeral procedures swiftly, allowing the veteran actor to be laid to rest in accordance with his wishes.
