An underground seawater supply pipe burst in Hong Kong's Quarry Bay on Monday afternoon (June 22), sending a water column more than 10 meters into the air and flooding nearby roads.
The incident occurred at around 1 p.m. near the junction of Taikoo Shing Road and Westlands Road. Seawater mixed with sand and mud surged onto the roadway, rapidly inundating the area. Vehicles passing through the scene were forced to drive through floodwater.
The Water Supplies Department (WSD) said it immediately dispatched personnel to the site after receiving reports of the incident and shut off the water supply valve. The flow of water was subsequently brought under control.
Images circulating online showed some onlookers stopping at the scene to take photographs of the dramatic water plume.
Police said they received reports that approximately 10 vehicles were damaged as a result of the burst pipe.
According to the WSD, the affected pipeline was identified as a 200-millimeter-diameter seawater supply main used to provide flushing water to the Taikoo Place area.
Engineering teams are carrying out emergency repair works and are striving to complete repairs and restore flushing water supply by midnight.
