A netizen recently posted that they found a purple fire hydrant in the North District and stressed it was "not AI." In the photo, the hydrant stands out from the usual red and yellow, looking more unique and "dreamy," with some netizens joking that it smells like "taro ice cream."

The post said it was their first time seeing a purple hydrant and wondered how it differed from normal ones, sparking discussion online. Some explained that the purple hydrants are part of the Water Supplies Department's recycled water supply system: since March 2024 the department has supplied recycled water to the Sheung Shui and Fanling areas and installed purple hydrants specifically for firefighting using recycled water, distinct from ordinary hydrants. Other netizens added that purple is the internationally used color for marking recycled water.

According to the Water Supplies Department, recycled water is treated wastewater that has been further processed for reuse. The government began recycled water trials in Hong Kong in 2006; the first trial at Ngong Ping treated and reused collected wastewater for non‑potable purposes.

As for reactions to the purple hydrant itself, many people joked that it looked like "blood not circulating," or "tastes like taro ice cream."
