What's the most expensive thing you've bought in Hong Kong? A fine-dining meal for four that costs US$1,000? A hostel that turned out to be "not nice"? Or something you haven't even opened yet – "If it's bad, then probably this one."

We hit the streets of Hong Kong to ask foreigners living in or visiting the city a few questions about money: What's the priciest thing you've purchased here? Is there anything actually cheaper than back home? How much monthly salary do you need to live comfortably in Hong Kong? And what percentage of that would you spend on rent?

Answers varied widely. Some said Hong Kong is "significantly more expensive" – everything costs about one and a half times more. Others felt it's "pretty much the same," with some even noting that local food and breakfast can be cheap, and alcohol might be a bit cheaper than in their home countries.

When it came to rent, people were willing to put down anywhere from 20% to 40% of their monthly income. As for a comfortable monthly salary, estimates ranged from HK30,000 to 40,000 – and one person went as high as US$ 10,000 to US$ 15,000 a month.

What about you? Hit play to hear what they said.
