According to the official determination by the China Earthquake Networks Center, a magnitude 7.9 earthquake struck the Philippine Islands region (latitude 5.55°N, longitude 125.10°E) at 7:37 am on June 8, with a focal depth of 40 kilometers. Separately, it was reported that the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology issued a tsunami warning after the strong earthquake occurred near the Philippine Islands region on June 8.
Several Filipino residents shared their terrifying moments during the earthquake on social media. When the earthquake struck, utility poles and street lamps on both sides of the roads swayed violently, and panicked pedestrians fled to open spaces. Following the earthquake, multiple buildings collapsed in the area, including school buildings.
