A buffalo in Bangladesh has become an online sensation due to its flowing blonde hair, a result of albinism, and its striking resemblance to former US President Donald Trump. Originally destined to be sacrificed during the Islamic holiday of Eid al-Adha, the animal was saved at the last minute after authorities intervened.
The 700-kilogram buffalo, which has a distinctive golden tuft of hair, is albino and much lighter in colour than ordinary buffaloes. Raised on a farm south of the capital, Dhaka, the animal is known for its gentle temperament. The farm owner named it "Trump" because of its hairstyle, which resembles the former president's iconic look. Since early this month, the buffalo has attracted many visitors. The owner said the animal receives four baths and four meals a day to stay healthy for the upcoming Eid al-Adha festival.
Just before it was to be slaughtered, authorities stepped in due to security concerns arising from the huge public attention. According to Reuters, Bangladesh's Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan has ordered that the buffalo not be slaughtered, and that the buyer be refunded. The animal will be transferred to the National Zoo in Dhaka.
The zoo's director told AFP on Sunday that the buffalo will be well cared for. "We have prepared a dedicated shelter for this albino buffalo and assigned caretakers. It will be kept in quarantine for two weeks," he said.
Eid al-Adha, one of the two most important Islamic festivals, involves the ritual sacrifice of sheep or cattle. More than 12 million animals are expected to be slaughtered during the holiday.
