The Hong Kong Observatory issued today (May 26) the first Very Hot Weather Warning of the year, forecasting extremely hot weather in Hong Kong, with a maximum temperature of 33 degrees Celsius. With air conditioning frequently used during summer, electricity bills naturally rise. While enjoying the cool breeze, if you want to save power and be eco-friendly, this energy-saving guide will help you out.
Open Windows Before Turning On the AC
Many people turn on the air conditioner and direct it toward themselves as soon as they get home. Not only does this make them more susceptible to illness, but it also wastes a significant amount of electricity. A better approach is to first open the windows to allow indoor and outdoor air circulation, while using a fan to blow away the heat accumulated on objects. Once the hot air has been expelled outdoors, turn on the air conditioner. This can reduce the cooling load on the compressor.
Don't Set the Fan to the Lowest Speed
Many people mistakenly believe that setting the air conditioner to a lower fan speed saves electricity, but this is incorrect. When the fan speed is set to the lowest level, the volume of air passing through the unit's total heat exchanger is reduced, which in turn increases the cooling load on the compressor. Therefore, a more energy-efficient approach is to set the air conditioner to the highest fan speed. This not only saves electricity but also helps the indoor temperature and humidity return to desired levels.
Set the Temperature Between 25°C and 28°C
Many people mistakenly believe that the lower the air conditioner temperature is set, the faster the room will cool down. However, tests conducted by a Japanese TV program show that immediately lowering the temperature has very little effect and instead increases electricity consumption. Based on a synthesis of multiple sources, the optimal air conditioner temperature should be set between 25°C and 28°C. This keeps the room cool without excessively consuming electricity.
Turning the AC On and Off Repeatedly Wastes the Most Electricity
If you turn off the air conditioner immediately upon leaving for a short while, it actually wastes a significant amount of electricity and also increases the load on the unit, making it more prone to damage. Inverter air conditioners consume the most electricity at startup. Moreover, repeated on-off cycles can damage the valves and pipes of the compressor responsible for cooling, increasing the risk of refrigerant leakage and reducing the overall cooling efficiency of the air conditioner. Therefore, if you need to step away temporarily, there is no need to turn off the air conditioner; simply set the temperature slightly higher.
Dehumidification Mode Is More Energy-Efficient
In hot and humid weather, the dehumidification function of the air conditioner can be activated. Dehumidification mode not only reduces indoor humidity, making occupants feel more comfortable, but also consumes less electricity than standard cooling. Moreover, during the dehumidification process, water vapor in the air condenses into droplets and is drained outdoors, which effectively reduces the "thermal capacity" of the indoor air to a certain extent, thereby assisting the air conditioner in achieving cooling more quickly.
Don't Run the Exhaust Fan While the AC Is On
When the air conditioner is running, the exhaust fan should be avoided; otherwise, the cool air will be continuously extracted, causing the air conditioner to consume more electricity to achieve cooling. However, when using the air conditioner, an electric fan can be turned on to direct the cool air toward oneself, thereby accelerating the cooling effect and saving electricity.
Clean Your AC Once Every Two Weeks
After prolonged use, a large amount of dust and dust mites accumulates inside the air conditioner, forming grime that impairs its cooling and heat dissipation efficiency. During the summer, it is recommended to clean the dust filter, air intake, and air outlet approximately every two weeks to prevent airflow obstruction that could affect performance. Additionally, a qualified technician should be regularly scheduled to inspect, maintain, and repair the unit.
