At around 11 pm yesterday (May 23), a 41-year-old man surnamed Lau was suddenly attacked by two men wielding a knife and a baton at a sitting-out area near the Island East Sports Centre in Sai Wan Ho. The assailants fled after the attack, and a female colleague who was with Lau rushed to call the police.
Upon arrival, officers found Lau at the scene with bleeding head wounds and injuries to his hands. He was conscious and taken by ambulance to Eastern District Hospital for treatment. Police recovered a blood-stained baseball cap and a pair of black shoes at the scene, and also discovered a wig believed to have been left behind by the attackers. Additionally, officers found a piece of clothing and a cap in a flower bed along Tai Hong Street, suspected to have been discarded by the assailants while fleeing.
It is understood that Lau holds a Hong Kong identity card and is of Vietnamese nationality. While working at a cleaning company in Lei King Wan, he became acquainted with a female manager who was nearly 20 years older than him, divorced, and had children. The couple has been married for nearly eight years. However, the marriage has recently shown signs of trouble. In March of this year, the woman brought a friend to propose a divorce to Lau, but he refused. During the ensuing argument, someone allegedly threatened in anger, "Get someone to take him out." Thus, investigators have not ruled out a possible connection.
Police have classified the case as "wounding" and it is being followed up by the Eastern District Criminal Investigation Team, who are now hunting for the two suspects. Sources indicate that the attackers spoke Vietnamese during the assault.
