On the afternoon of local time on May 23, a shooting incident occurred near the White House. It is understood that dozens of gunshots were heard at the scene. The suspect was shot by law enforcement officers and later died in the hospital. Another bystander was unfortunately hit by gunfire and sustained serious injuries.
Following the incident, the US Secret Service cleared the North Lawn of the White House, and reporters were instructed quickly enter the White House press briefing room. Selina Wang, a senior White House correspondent for ABC News, later posted a video on social media showing the harrowing moment the shooting apparently took place. In her post, she wrote: "I was in the middle of taping on my iPhone for a social video from the White House North Lawn when we heard the shots. It sounded like dozens of gunshots. We were told to sprint to the press briefing room where we are holding now."
The US Secret Service stated that shortly after 6:00 pm on the day of the incident, a man approached a Secret Service checkpoint located near the intersection of 17th Street NW and Pennsylvania Avenue. Preliminary investigations indicate that as the man neared the checkpoint, he pulled a weapon from his bag and began firing at the officers on duty. Secret Service officers returned fire, striking the suspect, who was then transported to a nearby hospital and later died despite efforts to save him.
During the exchange of gunfire, an unfortunate bystander was also hit by a bullet. It remains unclear whether the bystander was struck by the suspect's initial shots or during the subsequent exchange of fire. No Secret Service personnel were injured in the incident.
At the time of the incident, the US President was inside the White House and was not affected in any way. An investigation into the incident is currently ongoing.
