OpenAI announced that it will discontinue its standalone AI video application, Sora, less than two years after its launch. In a statement, OpenAI said, "We're saying goodbye to Sora app. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing. "

OpenAI did not disclose the reason for shutting down Sora, stating only that it would soon share details on the timeline and data preservation. The company said, "We'll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work."

Sora was publicly released in late 2024 and quickly gained attention for its realism. Its second version launched in September 2025, further advancing video generation technology. The platform also experimented with user-driven storytelling tools and social sharing features, but these additions never reached critical mass, leaving the standalone app seemingly the victim.

The shutdown of Sora comes just months after a major partnership with Disney. The deal aimed to bring licensed characters into AI-generated videos, with Sora planned to feature over 200 characters from major franchises. The agreement also included plans to release curated AI-generated clips on Disney+, originally scheduled for early 2026, but now no longer moving forward. Disney has pulled out of the partnership and canceled a planned US$1 billion investment in OpenAI.
