Today (the fifth day of the Chinese New Year, Jan. 21) is marked by the tradition of welcoming the God of Wealth, as it coincides with his birthday. However, Taiwan's fortune-telling expert Master Meng revealed that this day, known as "Po Wu," sees the lifting of all taboos observed from the first to the fifth day of the Chinese New Year. Although there are no significant taboos on this day, it is important to follow six customs to truly achieve "welcoming wealth and sending away poverty."
No Trash Left at Home
Since today is about "welcoming wealth and sending away poverty," it is essential to remove garbage (symbolizing poverty) from the home. This act helps send away the God of Poverty, allowing the God of Wealth to arrive.
Cleaning the Home Environment
The fifth day is an ideal time to organize the home, particularly ensuring the floors are cleaned thoroughly. A tidy environment helps dispel negative energy, making room for the arrival of the God of Wealth.
Avoid Visiting Others' Homes
It is advised not to visit others on this day, as this may bring in misfortune to their homes. Additionally, since everyone is sending away the God of Poverty on this day, going out might inadvertently attract negative energy.
No Napping
Since the day is dedicated to welcoming the God of Wealth, it is recommended to be physically active, as the ancients believed that "stillness" symbolizes poverty. While many businesses traditionally open on the fifth day, it is considered more auspicious to start on the sixth day in the Year of the Fire Horse (2026).
Do Not Call Others "Poor"
As it is the God of Wealth's birthday, refrain from calling others "poor" or making derogatory remarks about their financial status, as the God of Wealth may hear this and choose not to bestow blessings.
Do Not Leave Old Couplets Up
Many people decorate their homes with festive couplets during the Chinese New Year to attract prosperity. However, if old or damaged couplets are left up, they should be removed on the fifth day; otherwise, it may invite the God of Poverty to enter.
