To support the Northern Metropolis development, CLP has commissioned three low-carbon substations at Lok Ma Chau Loop West, Kwu Tung North, and Ma Sik Road. Their total capacity equals the electricity demand of four to five Hong Kong Science Parks, sufficient to meet regional power needs for the next decade.

One CLP's director in charge of power in the North regions, Mr. Lau, said today (Feb. 12) the Northern Metropolis covers about one-third of Hong Kong's land and future population, creating huge power demand. The three substations, all commissioned in 2024, feature underground cabling to enhance reliability against adverse weather.

All three incorporate green elements. The Lok Ma Chau Loop West Substation—the first completed building in the Hong Kong-Shenzhen Innovation and Technology Park—features solar panels, rainwater irrigation, green roofs, and living walls. The Kwu Tung North and Ma Sik Road substations also supply power to the MTR Northern Link.

CLP's network now serves over 80% of Hong Kong's population with world-class reliability.
