At a media briefing today (Dec. 20), Commissioner of Police Joe Chow announced that the death toll from the deadly fire at Tai Po's Wang Fuk Court has risen to 161.
Chow explained that the police had previously recovered 160 bodies from the scene. After forensic examination, DNA from an additional individual was found on one of the bodies, confirming it belonged to a couple. He stated that as identification work continues, the death toll may increase further.
He also noted that the police officers participating in today's passing-out parade had already begun formal duties three weeks ago, involved in tasks related to the National Games, the Tai Po fire, and the Legislative Council Election.
He acknowledged the immense challenges faced by frontline police officers and mentioned that while no psychological trauma reports have been received from the Disaster Victim Identification Unit (DVIU) so far, psychological support has been arranged.
