The No. 5 alarm fire at Wang Fuk Court in Tai Po on Nov. 26 caused significant casualties. This afternoon (Nov. 29), government officials, including Deputy Chief Secretary for Administration Cheuk Wing-hing, Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs Alice Mak, Secretary for Labour and Welfare Chris Sun, Regional Commander for New Territories North Lam Man-han, and Chief Superintendent Tsang Shuk-yin, who heads the Casualty Enquiry Centre, visited the fire scene. The officials inspected the site, assessed the situation, and provided updates to the media.
The police confirmed they have taken over the scene, initiated an investigation, and begun follow-up actions. 600 officers from the Disaster Victim Identification Unit (DVIU) were mobilized to search Wang Yan House and Wang Tao House at the site. The search operation has been completed, with no human remains discovered. However, rescuers managed to save 3 cats and a turtle from the affected buildings.
As of 3 p.m. today, the fire has resulted in 128 deaths and 83 injuries, according to the police. Among the deceased, 84 have been identified, while 44 remain unclaimed. Additionally, 37 of the injured individuals have been reported missing. Authorities noted that 150 people are still uncontactable, including 100 cases with incomplete information.
