Immigration is not as simple as it sounds. A Hong Kong father recently expressed online his plan to immigrate with his wife and three-year-old daughter, bringing along HK$90,000; however, he remains undecided about whether to go to the UK or Australia. His post immediately sparked a wave of skepticism from netizens, with comments like, "Are you serious about immigrating with HK$90,000 for a family of three?" and "HK$90,000? For a family of three? That wouldn't even cover a trip!"
The father posted on the social platform Threads, stating his intention to move with his wife and daughter. He is the only one in the family working and believes that if he earns HK$30,000 to HK$40,000 a month in Hong Kong, he can find a similar job abroad. "In Hong Kong, many people earn around HK$30,000 to HK$40,000, so if I immigrate, I would aim to earn the same. Can a family of three survive on that? Because in Hong Kong, it just barely suffices."
He plans to take HK$90,000 with him, covering visa fees and rent, but has yet to decide between the UK and Australia. He is thinking about working in a restaurant when he arrives, saying, "I plan to find a job in a Chinese restaurant first." He also added, "Only three months left until I say goodbye."
His post has generated significant discussion online, with overwhelming negative feedback. Many netizens commented, "Don't even talk about HK$90,000; even HK$900,000 would run out quickly!" and "By the way, think clearly, housing there will take a huge chunk of that money unless someone is supporting you. Plus, you'll have to pay taxes on everything, not to mention you expect to find a job earning HK$30,000 unless you already have an offer."
Some users pointed out, "For a family of four, budgeting HK$1 million is the bare minimum; for three people, at least HK$500,000 is needed, unless you plan to live in the basement without a car and rely on food banks." Others questioned, "If you only have three months, why haven't you decided yet? Visa applications take time, and don't you have to think about schools for your kids?"
The father responded, saying, "I have no choice; I'm not a wealthy person," to which netizens advised, "If you're not rich, stay in Hong Kong; once you go overseas, it's a struggle for the poor." The father retorted, "Staying in Hong Kong isn't much different; hardships reveal true feelings."
