The Immigration Department (ImmD) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) announced on Nov. 14 that, effective today (Nov. 15), nationals of Nepal who are in direct transit by air and do not leave the airport transit area may transit the HKSAR visa-free. Other visa arrangements for nationals of Nepal coming to the HKSAR will remain unchanged.

Aruna Gurung, HK's first female ethnic minority district councillor of Nepalese origin, warmly welcomed the policy. She pointed out that due to the limited availability of direct or connecting flights between Nepal and other cities, Nepalese travelers often face significant challenges in planning their journeys.

"This policy makes things much more convenient. No matter where you're flying to or from, as long as Nepalese nationals transit through HK, they can enjoy the benefit of visa-free transit. This is truly great news!" Aruna praised.

Although the new policy only applies to airport transit, it significantly simplifies international travel arrangements for Nepalese nationals.

A spokesperson for the ImmD highlighted that Nepal is one of the countries along the Belt and Road Initiative. This visa-free transit arrangement aims to provide greater convenience for Nepalese travelers and further strengthen HK's status as an international aviation hub.
