As Hong Kong approaches the 2025 Legislative Council General Election, civic engagement is on the rise across the city — and notably, among ethnic minority communities. In a place known for its diversity and inclusion, members of these communities are not just bystanders but active participants, eager to voice their hopes, cast their votes, and help shape the city they call home.

“We have the same rights as Hong Kong citizens — and the same responsibilities,” says Faheem Iqbal, one of three interviewees in this feature. Alongside Mohammad Saim Ulhaq and Mohammad Sameer, these individuals from Pakistan and India have lived and worked in Hong Kong for years, contributing to the city through roles in construction, delivery services, and more. They speak with pride and gratitude about the city’s openness, their belief in equality, and their commitment to being part of Hong Kong’s future.

Their voices reflect more than personal journeys — they represent a broader narrative of belonging, resilience, and civic identity. These men are not just ethnic minorities; they are Hongkongers, and they are ready to vote. Through their words, we are reminded that the future of any city is not built by a few, but by all — especially those who step forward with a heart full of hope, and a ballot in hand.
