A 40-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a series of thefts involving popular Labubu collectible dolls. Victoria police announced on Wednesday that a raid on a property in western Melbourne yielded 43 stolen Labubu dolls, with an estimated total value of 9,000 Australian dollars (approximately HK$45,400), some of which were limited editions.
According to Australian media reports, police executed a search warrant at the property on Tuesday, discovering the collection. Some of the recovered dolls are limited editions, valued at around 500 Australian dollars (approximately HK$2,500) each.
Police stated that the suspect is alleged to have stolen the dolls in four separate incidents from a shopping center in central Melbourne since July. He has been charged with four counts of burglary and two counts of theft. The man has been granted bail and is scheduled to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates' Court on May 5 next year.
The Labubu brand, a global craze, continues to see soaring popularity in Australia. It was reported that a Pop Mart store specializing in Labubu products opened in Sydney earlier this month, with enthusiasts lining up as early as 5 am to be among the first customers when the doors opened.
