Hong Kong is bracing for a combination of typhoon activity, cooler temperatures, and rising tides next week. The HK Observatory announced on Oct. 15 via social media that a potential tropical cyclone is expected to develop in the coming two to three days. This system is forecast to approach the vicinity of Luzon over the weekend and has a high likelihood of entering the northeastern part of the South China Sea thereafter.
On Sunday, a strong northeast monsoon is predicted to reach southern China. The combined effects of the monsoon and the potential tropical cyclone will cause strong winds in HK from early to mid-next week, with offshore and highland areas experiencing gale-force winds. Temperatures are expected to drop significantly, possibly falling to around 20°C or lower.
Next week also coincides with the occurrence of a high astronomical tide. Under the combined influence of these three factors, coastal water levels in the city are expected to rise during high tides for several consecutive nights starting next Monday. Residents in low-lying coastal areas are advised to implement flood prevention measures to safeguard their properties.
