Taxi in Hong Kong will install driving record systems starting next year. (DDN)
The Transport Department announced today (Oct. 12) on social media that it will authorize qualified suppliers from the fourth quarter of this year, allowing the industry to begin installing driving record systems in taxis in 2026 to protect the rights of passengers and drivers. Starting April 1 next year, all taxi drivers must provide at least two electronic payment methods to facilitate passenger payments.
In July this year, the government published a notice in the Gazette to amend regulations requiring all taxis to install trip recording systems and for all taxi drivers to allow passengers to pay taxi fares electronically. This aims to use technology to enhance the overall quality of taxi services and respond to public demand.
Authorities have previously stated that once all taxis have completed the installation, the driving record systems can begin operating immediately and must be linked to the Transport Department's central information system. The images and data recorded by the driving record systems must be encoded to protect the privacy of passengers and drivers, and only under specified circumstances can law enforcement agencies, the Director of Transport, and authorized persons access or retrieve the recordings from the vehicle.
