The death toll from Typhoon Bualoi in Vietnam has risen to 11, with 13 people still missing and 33 others injured, local daily newspaper Nhan Dan (People) reported Monday (Sept. 29).
Typhoon Bualoi made landfall in Hà Tĩnh, North Central Vietnam, around 1:30 am local time on September 29. At landfall, the maximum wind speed near the center reached level 11, but it weakened to a strong tropical storm thereafter, with wind speeds dropping from 117 km/h to approximately 90 km/h. Bualoi caused flooding and huge waves, leading to damage to local homes and a power outage.
Before making landfall, Bualoi generated waves as high as 8 meters along the Vietnamese coast. The Vietnamese government had already evacuated over 28,500 people before the typhoon struck and closed four airports in the central provinces, resulting in hundreds of flight cancellations or delays.
