Ragasa intensified into a super typhoon yesterday (Sept. 21), and it is expected to come closest to Hong Kong on Wednesday (Sept. 24), with offshore and elevated areas potentially experiencing hurricane-force winds. Coastal water levels may be similar to those during Typhoon Hato in 2017 and Typhoon Mangkhut in 2018. Meteorological experts describe Ragasa as extremely powerful, posing a significant threat to the region.
According to media reports, Hong Kong International Airport is considering suspending all passenger flights for 36 hours, which would be the longest suspension time in recent years. It reported that as the super typhoon Ragasa approaches, the airport and the Airport Authority plan to halt all flights as early as Tuesday (Sept. 23) at 6 pm until Thursday (Sept. 25) at 6 am, with an official announcement expected to be made today.
The Airport Authority responded to media inquiries, stating that it is closely monitoring the development of Super Typhoon Ragasa and has initiated preparatory work for the typhoon. This includes ensuring the safety of the tarmac, managing flight operations, addressing passenger concerns, coordinating ground transportation services between the airport and the city, and preparing staff rest areas. The Airport Authority is maintaining close communication with relevant government departments, airlines, transportation service operators, and other airport stakeholders to implement emergency measures. The authority will continue to provide updates on airport operations.
