The Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) announced this morning (Sept. 20) that Typhoon Mitag passed within 100 kilometers north of HK in the past few hours and has begun to gradually move away. Therefore, the HKO replaced the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 with the Standby Signal No. 1 at 9:20 a.m. today.
Despite Mitag's departure, rainbands associated with the typhoon continue to bring strong winds, heavy rain, and thunderstorms to the Pearl River Estuary. Rainfall over the past few hours reached approximately 30 millimeters in many parts of HK, with localized areas on HK Island recording over 50 millimeters.
The HKO expects Mitag to continue weakening as it moves further away from HK. Once Mitag no longer poses a threat to the region, all tropical cyclone warning signals will be canceled.
