At 11 am today (Aug. 17), a tropical depression was located approximately 640 kilometers south-southwest of Hong Kong, near 17.3°N latitude and 111.1°E longitude. It is expected to move northwest at a speed of about 18 kilometers per hour, generally heading towards Hainan.
The Hong Kong Observatory stated that due to the combined effects of the tropical depression and a high-pressure ridge over southeastern China, strong winds are expected offshore and in elevated areas, along with heavy rain and thunderstorms, with occasional heavy downpours. According to current forecasts, the tropical depression will remain about 600 kilometers or more away from Hong Kong, and the No. 1 standby signal will be maintained until at least 8 pm tonight. Whether a No. 3 strong wind signal will be issued later will depend on the distance of the associated strong wind areas from the Pearl River Estuary and local wind changes.
The Observatory predicts that Hong Kong will generally be mostly cloudy today, with intermittent strong winds, heavy rain, and thunderstorms, with heavier rainfall expected later. A fresh easterly wind will blow, with strong winds at times offshore and in elevated areas, along with large waves and surges at sea. Looking ahead to the next day or two, strong winds and heavy rain are expected to continue, with occasional heavy downpours. Wind speeds are expected to weaken later tomorrow. By mid to late week, the occurrence of heavy rain will gradually decrease, and the weather is expected to improve.
