
The Hong Kong Observatory issued a thunderstorm warning today (Aug. 14) at 4:10 am, anticipating frequent and intense thunderstorms with strong winds. From the issuance of the thunderstorm warning until around 9 am, the Observatory recorded a total of 5,268 cloud-to-ground lightning strikes. Between 8:15 am and 9:14 am, there were 2,421 lightning strikes recorded across the territory in just one hour.
The thunderstorm warning is expected to remain in effect until 10:30 am today. The Observatory advises citizens outdoors to avoid standing on elevated ground or near conductive objects, trees, or poles.
At 7:50 am, the Observatory upgraded to a black rainstorm warning signal, marking the fifth such warning issued this year.
